Crafting and Making for our Wildlife

As people all over the country and world respond to the effects of the Australian fires, the Animal Rescue Collective Craft Guild has shared lots of information on how to make items for affected wildlife. The response has been amazing and they have asked people to 'PAUSE CRAFTING' because they have been inundated with items and need to regroup. However, if you would like to contribute you can still make things for the future, or donate to our local wildlife centres. We have messaged them to ask if they want these items and will update here when we get a response. We have added direct links and files below to the patterns so you can get started :-). If you do have a Facebook account you can also follow them directly here:

Wilvo's is still accepting joey pouches according to their website

NB - MESSAGE FROM THE GUILD 12/1/2020 -UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE ALL CRAFT HUBS ARE CLOSED FOR STOCKTAKE. WE URGE YOU TO HOLD ONTO YOUR ITEMS OR PLEASE CONTACT YOUR LOCAL RESCUES TO SEE IF THEY NEED ITEMS.

All pouches need to be either 100% cotton or flannelette.
If you want to use synthetic fabric, such as poly-cotton, then that can be used for the outside of the 3D bags or hanging bags.

Another point made was that with all this focus on Wildlife, our domestic animal refuges may be understaffed and may appreciate extra offers of help, or you could try crafting items for our dogs and cats instead:

DIY for Wildlife

Picture
If you aren't a sewer or crocheter, the Animal Rescue MacGyvers Makers Guild  give instructions on how to make a variety of nesting boxes which are particularly needed for areas that have suffered the loss of large trees, and can also be used in your own garden. Again, if you do Facebook, you can find out more info directly from https://www.facebook.com/groups/arcmakers

A major contributor to the makers guild is Alice McGlashan from Nest Box tales who has kindly created a printable booklet for our area here. The file has everything you need to know to make designs for our region.
If you want to meet with other sheddies to organise a making session, please get in touch with us at the email address below with availability - we would love one of our members to coordinate this effort- we will organise a meetup if there is enough interest.

About the Coolum Women's Shed

The Coolum Women's Shed was established in 2018. We aim to enhance the health and wellbeing of women of the Sunshine Coast by providing the opportunity to participate in a range of activities including DIY, yoga, arts, crafts and other areas that may be of interest to our members. We are a welcoming and inclusive organisation, and we aim to create a connected community where women are empowered to pursue their interests.
