Info for Facilitators

The Coolum Women's Shed is a recently established not for profit association with the aim of enhancing the health and wellbeing of women on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia.
Our mission is to connect women of Coolum and surrounding areas through the medium of a variety of activities including exercise, crafts, arts, diy and gardening to facilitate learning of skills and creation of a social network. We aim to increase participation by offering reasonably priced or subsidised activities. We are not here to ‘undercut’ local businesses, in fact many women are introduced to local businesses through our activities.

Just as Men's Sheds are able to leverage the experience of their members, we are also lucky to have a community with a range of skills they want to share. As a facilitator we want to encourage you to become part of that community. Therefore we will work with you to offer something at a price point that allows women to participate on a regular basis. Some facilitators are happy to donate their services to the shed, others design a shorter session that fits within our ideal price range. If the shorter sessions are popular it is common for us to add longer sessions, or for our members to attend other classes and courses that you offer. In most cases we work with facilitators to offer a range of services, some are offered with the facilitator working for free or at a discount and others where we can pay the full rate. You are under no pressure to work with us if you feel it will put you at a disadvantage financially.

Frequently asked questions

Can I book or hire your space?
Sorry our space is not available for hire unless you are a not for profit organisation. We contract people to work for the shed to offer a service to our members.

Do I need public liability insurance?
Yes. If we are paying you, then the law will class you as an 'independent contractor', and you are not covered by our insurance. If an insurance claim occurred there is a risk that the insurance company will try to recover their costs if they think that you were in any way liable. Without insurance you may lose your home.

We have been told about some insurance that can cost as little as $70,  if you have your own insurance, you will be able to offer classes at locations other than the Coolum Women's Shed. If you aren't sure if there is a market for your classes, why not do a class as a fundraiser for the shed ? It's a great way to try out your format and test the market in a supportive environment :-) We can cover material costs and you will be covered by us as a volunteer.

Do I need an ABN?
No you can be classed as a sole trader. You must be able to raise an invoice.

Did you get my email / Facebook message / Instagram message?
We have been overwhelmed with the amount of people that want to work with the shed. Unfortunately until we have more admin volunteers we cannot guarantee that we will get back to you, although we do keep all the messages for when we have more capacity. Please accept our apologies. If you are really serious about getting involved with the shed, why not join us as a volunteer? You can share your skills and get to know how the shed works. Volunteering for us doesn't stop you from charging for classes and workshops in the future.

Can I be paid cash?
No sorry. All payments are by electronic transfer.
