Do you want to join us ? The Coolum Women's Shed is a recently established not for profit association with the aim of enhancing the health and wellbeing of women on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia. Our mission is to connect women of Coolum and surrounding areas through the medium of a variety of activities including exercise, crafts, arts, diy and gardening to facilitate learning of skills and creation of a social network. We aim to increase participation by offering reasonably priced or subsidised activities. We are not here to ‘undercut’ local businesses, in fact many women are introduced to local businesses through our activities.
Our organisation is entirely run by volunteers - the more volunteers we have, the more we can do. If you have something that you would like to see happen at the shed, why not get involved and set it up? There are plenty of support roles that can be done from home if you would rather contribute in that way. We also need people with experience of fundraising and the not for profit sector - if you think you may be able to help please get in touch. The best way to get in touch is to come to one of our activities, or you can send an email to :
More information on our key volunteer positions - Group coordinators and Admin Coordinators. Group coordinators – have an interest in establishing a regular meetup of people interested in a specific activity e.g. walking, macrame. Ideally each group needs a minimum of two coordinators to share responsibility and enable the group to continue when one of them can’t attend. Group coordinators are volunteers that are willing to take responsibility for:
Communicating with attendees about meetups
Following shed protocols for using the building (sign in sheets, ensuring place is locked up etc)
Maintaining a register of attendees and whether they are members or not, and taking payment if applicable.
Explaining to potential members how they can become a member.
Organising workshops or classes if required.
Welcoming new people to the group, and setting them up with what they need to know
Being proactive about organising regular meetups – e.g. setting dates, liasing with management about roster, social media.
Admin coordinators – already have or are interested in developing the skills needed to support the activities of the shed. The admin team includes:
Bookings coordinator
Social media / marketing coordinator - required
Volunteer coordinator - required
Grants coordinators - required
Secretarial team
Health & Safety Coordinator - required
Assistant Treasurer- required
These volunteers assist the group coordinators and activity coordinators to ensure that a) our members know about upcoming activities b) activities run smoothly and follow our policies c) volunteers are supported where needed
Admin coordinators have flexibility about when and where they can perform their roles – most of the admin can be done from home. We will give training to admin coordinators, but a basic level of computer literacy would be an advantage. Admin coordinators ideally have had prior experience in similar settings and are therefore able to manage their own activities. Depending on the role, admin coordinators may need to respond quickly – for example dealing with last minute changes to events or meeting deadlines from external parties. Other activities may require less time.
